Hallmarking is the UK's oldest consumer protection system and has been in operation since the 1300s.

Items made of precious metals are submitted to an Assay Office where they are independently tested for fineness and applied with a series of hallmarks which convey this information.

It is illegal to describe something as Gold, Silver, Platinum or Palladium if it isn't hallmarked. Please note that as we deal in vintage and antique jewels, some will be unmarked for various reasons, including that they may have been made overseas. We test them and will always describe them according to the UK legislation - so you may see us use terms like 'Yellow Metal' or 'Tests as 18ct gold'. Please ask us for more information.

At Clare Blatherwick we have our own hallmark which we are very proud of and which is held at Edinburgh Assay Office.
