What to expect when you come to me for a professional jewellery valuation

A jewellery valuation shouldn’t feel intimidating or mysterious — it should feel calm, clear and genuinely helpful. Whether you’re updating insurance, organising family pieces or simply wanting an expert overview of your collection, here’s what you can expect from a professional valuation appointment with me.

Why me?

As a highly experienced jewellery professional, and a Specialist Member of the Jeweller Valuers Association (as well as their 2024 Valuer of The Year), my valuations are recognised by major brokers, insurers and solicitors as professional. Your insurer may request you use a Registered Valuer - and that's what I am.

A private appointment - at our studio, or in your home, office or bank

We begin with a relaxed discussion about the pieces you’ve brought and the purpose of the valuation. Understanding why you need a valuation helps me tailor the report appropriately — whether that’s for insurance, estate planning, family records or simply gaining clarity.

This isn’t a rushed counter service.
It’s a dedicated, focused appointment where your jewellery receives proper attention.

A careful examination of each piece

Every item is assessed using a combination of technical skill and trained experience. This may include:

  • gemstone identification and analysis
  • microscopic examination of details and craftsmanship
  • metal testing
  • precise measuring and grading
  • condition and wear assessment
  • noting any history, alterations or distinguishing features

Even clients who’ve owned their pieces for years are often surprised by how much more there is to discover when seen under magnification and proper lighting.

High Quality Photography

Clear, high‑quality images are taken of each item.
These are included in your final documentation and provide an excellent visual record — invaluable for insurance, estates or simply keeping track of your collection over time.

A transparent, secure process

Your jewellery is handled with care throughout the appointment.
Depending on the complexity and number of items, some valuations can be completed during your visit, while others may require a little additional time.

Either way, the process is always explained and you’re kept fully informed.

Your finished valuation report

Once complete, you’ll receive a detailed, clearly written document that includes:

  • technical descriptions
  • gemstone and metal analyses
  • professional photographs
  • condition notes
  • relevant valuation figures
  • any supporting information or observations

It’s designed to give you clarity, confidence and a well-organised record of your pieces.

Why regular valuations matter

Jewellery markets change and replacement costs evolve, especially given the current volatility in the metals markets — which is why most insurers recommend updating valuations every 3–5 years.
Having an up‑to‑date report ensures that your jewellery is properly protected and accurately documented.

A thoughtful approach to your jewellery

My role is to help you understand and protect the pieces that matter to you.
Clients often leave feeling more connected to their jewellery and better informed about their collection — and that’s exactly how it should be.
