Open Studio in collaboration with The Scottish Gallery
A Very Special Summer Collaboration in North Berwick
This summer, something rather lovely is happening in North Berwick.
In collaboration with The Scottish Gallery, we’re opening the studio doors for a Summer Exhibition and Open Studio—a celebration of fine art, exceptional craftsmanship and the joy of making, all set against the backdrop of Fringe by the Sea.
Running from 31st July to 9th August, this is your invitation to step inside and experience a meeting of disciplines in a way that feels relaxed, personal and genuinely inspiring.
Art that begins in the landscape
At the heart of the exhibition are the luminous landscape paintings of Pascale Rentsch, an East Lothian-based artist whose work captures the shifting light and atmosphere of the local coastline with remarkable sensitivity.
Pascale paints en plein air, working directly in the landscape, and you can feel that immediacy in every piece. There’s a sense of movement, of weather, of being right there in the moment.
She’ll be joining us in the studio on selected days, and—weather permitting—you’ll even have the chance to see her work on the beach itself. It’s a rare opportunity to connect the finished paintings with the environment that inspired them.
Jewellery as art, craftsmanship as legacy
Alongside Pascale’s paintings, we’re delighted to be showing jewellery by Dr Malcolm Appleby MBE FRSE—one of the most important figures in contemporary British silversmithing.
For more than five decades, Malcolm has pushed the boundaries of engraving, creating pieces that are intricate, original and deeply inspired by the natural world. Now in his 80th year, his work sits in collections around the world, and it’s a privilege to have it here in North Berwick.
Together, the exhibition brings painting and jewellery into conversation—two different disciplines linked by craftsmanship, observation and a deep respect for materials.
Inside the studio
This is also very much an open studio.
Visitors are invited into my world of bespoke jewellery, remodelling and exceptional gemstones—whether that’s redesigning an inherited piece, creating something entirely new, or simply understanding what’s possible when you work closely with a jeweller.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes—how ideas become finished pieces, how old jewellery can be reimagined, or how gemstones are chosen—this is your chance to see it all a little more clearly.
It’s about sharing the process, the craftsmanship and the stories behind the pieces.
A perfect moment to visit and a collaboration worth celebrating
Taking place during Fringe by the Sea, this collaboration brings together art, jewellery and place at one of the most lively and creative moments of the year in North Berwick.
The studio is just a short walk from the station and the High Street, making it an easy addition to a day by the sea—or a thoughtful pause between festival events.
Whether you come for the paintings, the jewellery, or simple curiosity, we’d love to welcome you in.
As Clare says:
“Bringing together Pascale Rentsch’s extraordinary paintings, Malcolm Appleby’s remarkable jewellery and an insight into my own studio world feels like a very special way to celebrate craftsmanship, creativity and place during Fringe by the Sea.”
And from Christina Jansen, MD of The Scottish Gallery:
“Clare's independent design studio provides a distinctive setting in which to experience the work… this is a particularly rewarding collaboration during one of East Lothian's most vibrant cultural events.”
We couldn’t agree more.
