You may be familiar with the way in which diamonds are graded but when it comes to coloured gemstones things are more complicated. When it comes to describing colour in gemstones, as jewellers and valuers we need to look at hue, tone and saturation.
One of the many professional tools I have invested in is a colour grading system that enables me to log a reference on your insurance valuation which would mean in the event of loss, we could find a replacement stone of the same colour. With over 1400 colours in the comparison system it takes a keen eye and I regularly undertake a hue test to ensure my colour vision is on form.
